  • 1) Paragraph one should state a dominant impression. If you select the poem, your dominant impression will be thematic as you have access to the whole piece. If you select the prose, your dominant impression will be stylistic as you will only have access to a 2-3 page excerpt from a larger work

  • 3) Consider the Timeframe the piece is written and the author's background. During the Romantic period, writers are influenced by industrialization and the revolutionary spirit. The author's background experiences also inspire a piece.
  • 4) Literary and Sound Devices- Choose a variety of high-end devices!
  • 5) MOST IMPORTANT: For thinking tenets 2-4 do not go on a tangent. Always link your ideas to your dominant impression.

Organization is essential, but use transition words in your body paragraph and a strong introduction to capture the necessary structure.  If you need to tell your audience what to think, and what your piece will achieve, then you have not demonstrated superior writing.
